What is federal solar tax credit?
• The federal residential solar energy credit is a tax credit that can be claimed on federal income taxes for a percentage of the cost of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system.
• The system must be placed in service during the tax year and generate electricity for a home located in the United States. There is no bright-line test from the IRS on what constitutes “placed in service,” but the IRS has equated it with completed installation.
• A solar PV system must be installed before December 31, 2022, to claim a 26% of the cost of a solar installation. It will decrease to 22% for systems installed in 2023 and disappear for residential installation completed in 2024 and beyond unless Congress renews it.
What is a tax credit?
A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction in the amount of income tax you would otherwise owe. For example, claiming a $1,000 federal tax credit reduces your federal income taxes due by $1,000.

Am I eligible to claim the federal solar tax credit?
You might be eligible for this tax credit if you meet all of the following criteria:

• Your solar PV system was installed between January 1, 2006, and December 31, 2023.
-
• The solar PV system is located at your primary or secondary residence in the United States, or for an off-site community solar project, if the electricity generated is credited against, and does not exceed, your home’s electricity consumption.

• You own the solar PV system (i.e., you purchased it with cash or through financing but you are neither leasing nor are in an arrangement to purchase electricity generated by a system you do not own).

• The solar PV system is new or being used for the first time. The credit can only be claimed on the “original installation” of the solar equipment.
How do you claim the federal solar tax credit?
To claim the residential credit, you need complete the Form 5695 along with the Form 1040 when you file your income taxes. The instructions for the Form 5695 are fairly easy to follow, and include a worksheet to help you figure out how much of the credit you can claim this year. You can purchase a photovoltaic system in the following ways;

Buy cash. You are only paying us for the total of your purchased system, for example; Following the same previous example of 5.2Kw, your total price to pay us would be $14,569.

Buy through your bank or financial institution of preference. In this option you must be approved by your bank or finance company for a loan for the total of your system, following the previous example a 5.2Kw system its price would be $14,933, which would be the bank that issues the total payment to us and you would only be paying a fee set by your bank on a monthly basis with its terms and conditions.
